When you give a human a potato, beautiful things can happen.

Since 2015, I have been carving a potato into an animal every Thanksgiving to make space for some creativity and fun. To my utter delight, I've had the opportunity to share this practice with organizations in hands-on playful learning workshops for holiday parties and happy hours, including Apple, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Creative Mornings, PBS KIDS, Solaris Bank, and McMaster University. If you're interested in working together to host a potato workshop, here's what you can expect:

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

Give yourself an hour to change your relationship to a root vegetable. With self-proclaimed amateur potato sculptor Melissa Gedney, make space in your day to make something truly weird and laugh with new (spud) buds.

The workshop design includes:

πŸ₯”A brief introduction and tips

πŸ₯”A great potato-related playlist to guide a solid amount of work time

πŸ₯”The funniest virtual show and tell you’ve ever participated in

WHAT TO EXPECT

πŸ₯” Participants will learn to be delighted by the possibilities of a potato

πŸ₯” Participants will carve a potato into a new shape

πŸ₯” Participants will laugh

WHAT YOU NEED

πŸ₯” Your potato(es)

πŸ₯” A vegetable peeler (if you have one)

πŸ₯” A small knife

πŸ₯” A cutting board

πŸ₯” Your imagination!

Other items that have been helpful in the past for decorating include: peppercorn, fresh herbs, and toothpicks. Feel free to get creative and bring other materials if you’d like!

I've hosted experiences, big and small. If you'd like to explore what a playful potato workshop in your context looks like, I'd tot-ally love to hear from you.Β
